The here and now... and what and why

Complacency is a trap. At least that’s what I was thinking when I up and left the comfort of a Yankee prep school gig, where I taught music, amongst other things, for 28 years. There was also that life long career as a composer, musician and artist.

First, it was a year in St. Thomas, USVI, working as a reporter and shooting photography and then, a year in San Agustin Etla, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Time passed.
More time passed and a year back in the Athens of America followed by a hasty return to Oaxaca where it is all happening.
A couple of years in San Sebastian Etla and now, just down the road in San Pablo Etla. Life is good.

If a tree falls....

Some trees are more important than others.  Sadly, they do not live forever, even though the one in El Tule seems timeless at around 1500 years.  So it was with sadness, that I paid my respects to this old beauty in the zocalo in San Bartolo Coyotepec.  The village, famous for its black pottery and folk art museum, has a large tranquil zocalo, that is always very well maintained.  I have killed a lot of time sitting under that tree's branches, just watching the world go by.  I have no idea what caused it to split so badly and lose most of it branches.  There is some controversy as to who did or did not do something.  However, the deed it done.  I watched them water it and they emptied water trucks pretty regularly.  It had a good life and it will leave a huge hole.  I am sure they will plant something to replace it and in time.....
Meanwhile this was happening right next to fallen tree.  Life goes on.....
